Training Session 1:

Using the Visual Thesaurus

In this training session, we cover the basics of searching the Visual Thesaurus. We show the logistics of searching words for definitions and synonyms, including techniques for isolating synonyms by meaning and parts of speech. Then we explore the concept level of the Visual Thesaurus, which allows you to search for categories and examples of things by clicking on meanings and relationships. Through this technique, the Visual Thesaurus can aid in framing an effective web search, helping students move from the general to the specific to get meaningful results. We also walk through the processes for printing and for using the foreign language feature. (Running time: 18:42)
