This verb (and noun) is so frequently found with "lips" that all other uses are mere shadows. Its meaning, however, is simply "to gather in wrinkles or folds," so it's a somewhat arbitrary development that we use it more often with things made of flesh than with inanimate things. Dictionaries relate it to "poke" (the noun that means "bag or sack") but always with the qualifier "probably."
