Sounds like it has been with us since the dawn of time:)
I'm sure it's been someone's name sometime, or the name of an animal, plant etc.
Actually, my favourite word is "Kablooie", but it can't be found in any dictionary, so...
"The horrendous space kablooie"
This is how Calvin, from Calvin and hobbes, thinks we should rename "The big bang".
Religion (especially the catholic/protestant church) has through all ages tried to control the masses. And "shame", alligned with "sin" (which is another word that I truly loath), has always been something to avoid, to ensure that St. Peter unlocks the door when we snuff it. And who is it that defines what is shameful or sinful? Ah, the church of course. Am I a sinner? No, I am a human being.
