"Antediluvian means "before the flood" — that is, the Biblical flood with Noah's ark. Generally, though, the word is used — often humorously — to describe something really, really old." I find it fascinating that a word so eloquent and sesquipedalian could have such a narrow literal meaning - before the flood - but have such a fantastic common usage; something as old as time.
