its the word that comes to mind when i see someone trying to pass off some counterfeit as genuine. Like a gold plated watch as the real thing. to me , meretricious means showy, cheap, tacky, fake

i heard this word used incorrectly when i was young, so the incorrect meaning stuck with me. Finding this out made it challenging to learn the correct meaning as a noun conveying eagerness, liveliness, briskness
