Too many talented people in the Land of the Free have been lulled into inaction. "Ascendancy" (i.e., social boldness) reminds others and me to step up to the plate and swing at life's abundance. And it also prompts us to also take turns on the pitcher's mound to send a few fast balls to other heavy hitters. It is a word with little promise. Occasionally it saves a child from burning a hand on a hot stove, or protects boundaries set in personal and professional relationships. Yet too often is is a synonym for fear of failure and fear of success. When used to stop progress, No becomes a four letter word.
