It is about something that elicits emotion and causes an experiential reaction which can be negative or positive. Something that is provocative has a power that does not always make itself visible at first.

I associate boredom with the inability to see all the wonder around. When a person says "I'm bored" or something is boring they become a victim of circumstance. It's a sad word.
