When I first began studying history in college, it astounded me that there was a word dedicated to the act of throwing someone out of a window.

decimate
One of the reasons I hate this word is that it is often misused. Even here, the word is being used as a synonym for eradication, when its original meaning is to lose one-tenth of your strength. Significant, yes, but not a total wipeout.
