The Star Spangled Banner

April 23, 2012
During the War of 1812, British ships attacked Fort McHenry that stood in the harbor defending the city of Baltimore. An American prisoner named Francis Scott Key watched the battle from the deck of a British ship. The bombardment continued all night, but in the first light of dawn Key saw the American flag still flying defiantly over the fort. Key was so inspired that on the spot he wrote the poem that would later become America's National Anthem.
