Words you don't need to use

These are words that are overused or abused. Dollar words when a ten cent word will express your meaning just as well.

???? Gift is a dollar word, and Endowment is a ten cent word, or for that matter any of the other alternatives???

I hate when gift is used as a verb! Create is a good word, much better than make. I can make a doll house from a pattern but to create one means that it is all my own design and has never been done quite this way before.

I would add "impact" when used as a verb. And "impactful" which I just loathe in all circumstances.

I don't think any of these words are "dollar" words except maybe utilize, which often can (and should) be replaced with use - a very effective "ten cent" word. I agree that some of these words may be misused or overused, but that doesn't make them words I don't need to utilize...er, use.

I hate it profoundly when "grow" is used as a transitive verb!
