Xylem and Phloem are words very unlikely to be encountered by anyone who has not taken high school biology or botany, which isn't likely to have happened before or during the freshman year. Other than that, it's a great list. Sadly beyond the vocabularies of most HSFs, but a good target to aim for.

Easy way to remember the difference between xylem and phloem is this phrase using alliteration: "xylem up and phloem down"

i think if this list was put in front of random freshman they would think people are crazy and only understand half or maybe a little less of what these words mean

Any freshman of my acquaintance that could recognize (w/understanding) the whole of the words on this list would be quite a rare freshman indeed. Of course, there are some (such as myself) who would make an effort to achieve mastery of lists like these in an effort to inspire full understanding of their High School courses, others who would have lists as featured thrust into their possession as requisite for a class, and others still who simply take interest in vocabulary that would quite enjoy this list. In all fullness, I regard this list as a suitable trial for high school freshmen to undertake.
