The New York Times + Vocabulary.com = Enlightened Students

Here at Vocabulary.com, we have always believed that one of the best ways to improve your vocabulary while learning about world events is by regularly reading a newspaper like The New York Times. That’s why we are especially proud to announce our partnership with The New York Times Learning Network. This partnership will further boost students’ literacy skills by bringing Vocabulary.com’s word-learning power to students accessing The Times’ fresh and engaging content on a daily basis.
Word of the Day
One exciting way that Vocabulary.com is partnering with The Learning Network is by providing the Word of the Day. Teachers and students visiting The Learning Network will see the Word of the Day’s definition, how it’s been used in a Times article, and a Vocabulary.com question on the word — so they can test out their knowledge of the word in the context of Vocabulary.com’s adaptive learning program. If users are logged into Vocabulary.com, clicking on the Word of the Day question will automatically enter that word into their word learning program so they can eventually master it, along with any other unfamiliar words they may encounter in The Times.
List Making with Articles from The New York Times
Another way that Vocabulary.com empowers learners to more deeply engage with Times content is by using Vocabulary.com’s VocabGrabber to create learnable vocabulary lists for Times articles. You can copy and paste a Times article into our listmaker, and Vocabulary.com will identify the most relevant Tier II and Tier III words form the article within seconds. By clicking “Learn this List,” Times readers will immediately embark on a personalized learning path to master that set of words.
Vocabulary.com and The Learning Network at NCTE
If you’re an English teacher and headed to NCTE’s annual November conference in Minneapolis, come check out how Vocabulary.com has teamed up with the Learning Network to present “Annotating the World: Digital Tools for Close Reading Nonfiction,” a session taking place at 12:30 on Friday, November 20th. We would love to see you there!
Join us in celebrating what we feel is a perfect partnership. The Learning Network provides teaching and learning materials to students discovering the world through the eyes of Times journalists, and Vocabulary.com helps Times readers better appreciate and comprehend the language used to tell those stories.
