The Results Are In: Students Master Over 14 Million Words in 2015-16 Vocabulary Bowl
In the second annual Vocabulary Bowl, an astounding number of students participated in the battle to see which school could master the most words. A whopping 582,785 students from 23,804 schools across North America competed and collectively mastered 14,108,105 words!
Those numbers more than double the participation we saw in the 2014-15 Bowl. But one thing stayed the same compared to last year: César E. Chavez High School of Houston, Texas once again managed to surpass all the other schools that participated, with more than 344,000 words mastered on our yearly leaderboard, which ran from October 1, 2015 to May 1, 2016.
Just as impressively, Houston's Lanier Middle School came out on top in the middle school division, with more than 230,000 words mastered, good enough for second place overall. Next week, we will be heading down to Houston to celebrate the achievements of Chavez and Lanier students and bestowing the championship trophies. Students, teachers and staff at both schools will be honored with ceremonies commemorating their victories, featuring some very special guests. Stay tuned for our reports on those events.
Thank you to everyone for competing in this year's Bowl. We're already looking forward to the beginning of the 2016-2017 Vocabulary Bowl, which promises to be even bigger and better!
