The science of vocabulary building

Latest in Vocabulary-Learning Strategies? Puppies!

If you've been following Providence RI's receipt of a five million dollar grant from the Bloomberg Foundation to improve kindergarten readiness among low income children by equipping them with devices that record and analyze the words they are hearing, you might be interested in a program in Indianapolis, IN where preschoolers reinforce vocabulary knowledge by reading and teaching vocabulary words. . . to puppies.

The project was a collective effort of local chapters of the United Way, PBS (WFYI), and the Humane Society and drew on popular PBS vocabulary-focused children's show, Martha Speaks. Read about the puppy project here, or check out a host of adorable photographs of the eleven lucky preschoolers and their new canine friends.
