An "Indictment" of "Tyranny": Nelson Mandela's Words

As we honor the life and memory of Nelson Mandela, who died today, we remember his leadership, his forgiveness, and his ability to unite the people of South Africa and inspire the world. 

We also remember his words. Language was essential to his work and to his understanding of his mission. During his 27-year imprisonment, he smuggled in a complete Shakespeare, underlining important phrases and words. Here we present words that were already resonant with him before his imprisonment in a Vocabulary List pulled from his 1964 speech "I am Prepared to Die."
