This is perhaps the most misused word in English. When America's hoi polloi say 'racist', they mean to say 'bigot'. A racist thinks that his race is superior to all others; a bigot simply doesn't like, or indeed hates other ethnic groups. Most people are bigots; a few are racists. I am a bigot because I despise certain groups.
