I remember the day I learned this word in an English lesson being taught by Al Wright. I just loved the idea of two antonyms being used together to make total sense. He quoted Milton's Paradise Lost: "Darkness visible" rather than Shakespeare. I fell in love with the concept and Milton there and then.
Not because I have had a writ sereved on me but because my students seem incapable of understanding that the past tense of 'write' is 'wrote' or 'have written'. Whenever I hear it (at least twenty times a day' it causes me to wince and issue an automatic correction in my best Miss Brodie voice. Unfortunately, I am fighting a losing battle. Language is organic and changes I know...but this is a step too far for me.
