cardiac
A new study suggests that a heart's beating helps prevent cancers from growing there. Researchers compared normal mouse hearts with transplanted external hearts that circulated blood but did not beat. They found that cancer cells multiplied much faster in the non-beating organs. Curious about why cardiac cancers are so rare, scientists speculate that pressure on the heart as it pumps blood keeps the cells from dividing. The Greek root of cardiac is kardia, "heart."
carousel
The Smithsonian Institution's iconic carousel on the National Mall reopened to the public after a three-year renovation. Among the first to board the restored amusement ride were the very individuals who helped desegregate it in 1963: They were the first Black children to ride it after the park where it was then located was finally desegregated after years of protests and demonstrations. Many of them, now grandparents, lifted their own young grandchildren onto the painted horses' backs.
cobra
A German tourist died after he was bitten by a cobra that had slithered up his pant leg at a snake-charming show in Hurghada, Egypt. The 57-year-old man was on vacation with his family when they attended the show, which featured two of the large, venomous snakes. The snake charmer draped the cobras over several audience members' shoulders before letting one of the reptiles crawl up the man's leg. Cobra is from Portuguese cobra de capello, "serpent of the hood."
commemorate
A statue of Rocky Balboa was moved inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art as part of an exhibit commemorating the 50th anniversary of the film Rocky. The bronze figure of the fictional champion with his boxing gloves raised has stood outside the museum for 20 years. The new exhibit honors the movie's legacy, its connections to Philadelphia, and its "themes of memory, identity, power, and representation in public art." The Latin root of commemorate means "to remind."
devotee
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, a noted soccer devotee, announced a series of free World Cup events for fans who can't afford to attend the matches. Watch parties and celebrations will be held in each of the city's five boroughs. Mamdani, who describes himself as a lifetime soccer fan and occasional player, lobbied unsuccessfully last year for FIFA to cap resale ticket prices for the World Cup event and set aside a percentage of affordable tickets for local residents.
martial art
As Japan's population ages, nursing homes have more elderly residents and a shortage of workers. Some facilities have begun recruiting mixed martial arts fighters and other athletes to work as caregivers. The traditional Asian self-defense practitioners, along with sumo wrestlers, have short careers and often struggle to make a living. Their strength and vitality are an ideal fit for caregiving roles, and the nursing home residents tend to treat the athletes as beloved grandchildren.
meteor
Meteor sightings were double the usual number in the first three months of 2026, and experts aren't sure why. Between January and March, there were 40 reports of fireballs made to the American Meteor Society, each observed by at least 50 people. More than 30 of these were accompanied by sonic booms, a loud sound that usually indicates especially large space rocks. Scientists are mystified by the uptick, which did not occur during a known major meteor shower.
modular
A growing number of people whose houses have been destroyed in wildfires and other disasters are rebuilding using modular homes made from fire-resistant materials. These prefab structures are delivered in sections that are assembled on site, and many are now designed to withstand hurricanes, hail storms, earthquakes, and extreme snowfall, as well as fire. Building a home from standardized units can be faster, more convenient, and less expensive than constructing one from the ground up.
sovereign
During a visit to the U.S., Britain's reigning sovereign discussed the bonds and shared history between the two countries. King Charles III addressed Congress and spoke at a formal White House banquet, keeping most of his remarks lighthearted and congenial. The monarch also gave President Trump a gift, a bell from a World War II submarine. "Should you ever need to get hold of us, well, just give us a ring!" the king said. Sovereign is from Old French soverain, "lord."
stamina
Sabastian Sawe made history at the London Marathon on April 27 by becoming the first man to run an official marathon in under two hours. The Kenyan distance runner set a new world record with a time of 1:59:30 (1 hour, 59 minutes, and 30 seconds), breaking the previous record of 2:00:35. Sawe's exceptional stamina, which he developed while running 150 miles per week at high altitudes, allowed him to maintain a pace of about 4:34 (4 minutes and 34 seconds) per mile throughout the marathon.
