cease-fire
The United States and Iran reached a deal on a 60-day cease-fire, a major step toward ending the three-month war and reopening the busy Strait of Hormuz. Officials say the agreement is a vague outline that will act as a framework for continuing negotiations between the two countries. The initial truce allows Iran to export its oil and grants all countries free passage in the strait. Ceasefire was originally a military command, meaning "stop shooting."
circumscribe
The British government announced a plan to bar children from using major social media apps. Beginning early in 2027, the new regulations will circumscribe access to Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, YouTube, and other sites, banning anyone under the age of 16. The rule is intended to protect "the safety and happiness" of kids online. Over 90 percent of public comments supported the measure. The Latin root of circumscribe means "draw a circle around" or "set the boundaries of."
filament
A team of researchers mapped the 68 quadrillion miles of underground filaments comprising Earth's carbon circulatory system. The threadlike offshoots of microscopic fungi are part of a hidden network that carries nutrients and water to plants and removes carbon. If these thin strands were laid end-to-end, their length would be more than 700 million times longer than the distance between Earth and the Sun. The Latin filum, "thread," is the root of filament.
induct
Taylor Swift was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, becoming the youngest woman to win the honor. The 36-year-old singer-songwriter and global pop star gave an emotional speech that touched on her songwriting beginnings and expressed gratitude for being formally admitted into an exclusive group of musicians that includes luminaries such as Stevie Wonder, Dolly Parton, and Bob Dylan.
innate
Several new studies found that across cultures, people have an innate tendency to walk counterclockwise. Researchers don't know why, but evidence suggests that whether people are right- or left-handed, the majority have an inborn inclination to veer left. One hypothesis that adult social habits accounted for the phenomenon was disproven after studies of young children in playgrounds showed that most also moved counterclockwise. The Latin root of innate means "to be born in."
officiate
As they officiate at World Cup matches this summer, referees are enforcing several brand new rules, many of them intended to speed up the matches. These changes include a 10-second time limit for substituted players leaving the field and five seconds for throw-ins and goal kicks. As they preside over the matches, referees will also wear headsets equipped with small, ultra-lightweight RefCams that can allow fans to see replays from an official's viewpoint.
revelry
After the New York Knicks beat the San Antonio Spurs in game five of the finals, winning the NBA title for the first time in 53 years, New Yorkers took to the streets in raucous celebration. Tens of thousands of fans rejoiced across the city, with the revelry lasting throughout the night. While most of the merrymaking was peaceful, 63 people were arrested for disorderly behavior. Revelry comes from the Old French verb reveler, "make merry" or "be disorderly."
spurn
An elite London club for top magicians rejected a membership application on behalf of D4RYL, a popular robot magician. Human magician David Penn, who owns the robot and includes it in his act, argued that D4RYL was qualified to join the Magic Circle because "it's onstage performing magic." The club spurned the non-human applicant, stating, "Wonder is emotional, not just mechanical." The Old English root of spurn is spurnan, "to kick (away)."
trillion
The rocket company SpaceX went public, transitioning from being a private company to a publicly traded company, and was valued at $2 trillion on its first day of trading. Owner Elon Musk, already the world's wealthiest person, officially became the first trillionaire in history. Although trillion was coined from tri-, "three" and million, this unimaginably large number is actually 1,000 billions, or a million millions — to put it numerically, 1,000,000,000,000.
whey
The global dairy industry is struggling to produce enough whey to keep up with customer demand. Whey, a watery liquid that's left over from the cheesemaking process, is a concentrated source of milk protein. It is commonly dried into a powder which can be added to smoothies and shakes and is used by manufacturers to enrich foods including cereal, bagels, crackers, and cookies. The increased popularity of whey has resulted in shortages and record high prices.
