Eclectic Words

Words collected over the years that meet one or more of the following criteria: (1) words that we have read or heard, but may not be able to clearly define if called upon, (2) words that are extremely descriptive of a specific, abstract concept, (3) words that some people occasionally define or pronounce incorrectly (often opposite of the true meaning), and (4) words that simply sound pleasant or have a crisp, descriptive tone.

Fun list. I suppose it shows what a word nerd I am that I recognized, and could come up with a reasonably close definition, for all but two of the words.

This is really an impressive word listing. I especially like the pronouncement feature of your web page. When I hear the word pronounced, it gives me a sense of confidence that even I can add it to my every day vocabulary.

Words really do empower us.

I thought 'droll' meant 'not funny' as well, but I'm surprised that Clarissa's facile mind thought so to. "fripperry' is fabulous!

Entertaining list, although I must be an even greater word nerd than Karen M. (I knew all of them). In addition to 'cachet', I have often heard the words 'notorious', 'penultimate', and 'comprise' used inappropriately.

Is the defnition given for some of these words necessarily the most common one?
