The Princess and the Tin Box

By Ms. B (China)
A short story by James Thurber; a parody of the traditional fairy story trope where princes come seeking the hand of the beautiful princess. Thurber creates an ironical outcome. Instead of the princess being beautiful both inside and out, and the poor but handsome prince being selected because of his true heart, the princess chooses according to materialistic principles. Thurber's parody suggests princesses (and princes) are no longer what they used to be.
