Least Favorite Word:
funFun is an "f" word in certain contexts. When parents or academic teachers admonish me, a musician/educator, to be sure the students have "fun," I brace for the slippery slope towards lowered expectations. Disneyland is fun; making music is satisfying, A Halloween party can be fun; playing in a band is collaborative sport. The acquisition and application of physical technique, intellectual acumen and aesthetic choice is absorbing, engaging and creative. Fun may ensue but it mustn't be the goal.
