I've been a writer, editor and consultant for about 25 years (mostly food, wine and travel), and I have co-founded Wine X Magazine, the industry's premier publication for young adults. I've written for dozens of magazines and newspapers and my cookbook, Seafood Pasta & Noodles -- The New Classics, was published by Ten Speed Press.

I'm also a lifelong word junkie, and take pleasure in all kinds of word games and puzzles. In addition, I enjoy nature activities such as birding, snorkeling, and astronomy, plus photography, music (I play ukulele and write Hawaiian-themed songs), crafts and gardening. And cats.

Reflective, such as by cats' eyes; also by certain minerals, wood grains, fabrics, and the dreaded "red-eye effect" in photos. As a cat lover, I delight that its primary reference is to cats (and their mystical eyes). It has also come to acquire a broader definition, becoming more useful and perhaps therefore more visible. What's more, the word itself has a mysterious, elusive and poetic personality. (It also lacks an obvious spelling or pronunciation.) Just like cats.

The disease is a scourge that has sickened and killed too many millions, including too many personal friends and family members. I dislike the meaning of the word (rather than its sound) due to the pain it causes and the terror it invokes.
